Citizenship services

The Embassy of Canada in Argentina and Paraguay provides consular and citizenship services on an . Please be advised that only clients with an appointment will be accepted for in-person services.

Children born abroad to a Canadian mother / father

If you are a Canadian citizen and would like to apply for a certificate of Canadian citizenship for your child born abroad, please download form .

The application must be supported by the following documents (original and photocopy):

  1. The child's birth certificate + a translation into English or French by a sworn translator.
  2. The mother's and/or father's proof of Canadian citizenship (Canadian birth certificate or citizenship card). The father or mother must have been Canadian at the time of the child's birth.
  3. Two pieces of identification (Argentine DNI, Paraguayan cédula, passport)
  4. . Photos instructions are attached to the form. It is your responsibility to check that the photos comply with the specifications.
  5. Receipt of fees paid. Pay the citizenship certificate (proof of citizenship) CAD 75 before you apply for citizenship services.

Note: If your child was born in Argentina, he/she will have to leave the country on an Argentine passport. Argentine children are subject to local regulations applicable to the exit of minors from Argentina.

Notarial services

The Embassy of Canada in Argentina and Paraguay provides notarial services on an . Please be advised that only clients with an appointment will be accepted for in-person services.

The Apostille Convention came into effect in Canada on January 11, 2024. This resulted in some changes to authentication services provided by the Government of Canada.

Documents issued in Canada to be submitted in Argentina or Paraguay (or in other countries who are signatories of the Apostille Convention) should bear the apostille.

The Embassy of Canada in Buenos Aires may issue an apostille on the following documents:

  1. Original birth, marriage and death certificates (except for wallet size certificates) issued in all provinces in Canada.
  2. Original Criminal Record Checks issued by the RCMP in Ottawa.
  3. Public documents issued or notarized in the following provinces: Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island and Yukon. Please send your scanned document to bairs-consular@international.gc.ca to verify if the Embassy may issue an apostille. The Embassy will seek authorization from ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ.

The Embassy cannot issue apostilles for the following:

Documents not listed above and documents issued (other than original vital statistics documents) or notarized in these provinces: Ontario, Quebec, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan. For documents issued or notarized in these provinces, please contact the competent provincial authority in Canada

Processing time: 5 working days in Buenos Aires (items 1 and 2 above), to be confirmed (item 3) + shipping.

If a document will be used in a country that is not a signatory to the apostille, please check with the destination country as to their requirements.

Documents issued in Argentina and Paraguay are to be apostilled by Argentine / Paraguayan authorities.

Attestation of signatures / affidavits

A consular officer may witness /attest your signature on a document to be presented in Canada (appointment required). The Embassy does not offer certain services which can be provided by notaries public (list of local providers available).

Applicants in Paraguay:

If you have a document issued or notarized in Canada that is eligible for the apostille service as per the instructions above, please contact our Honorary Consulate at Asuncion@international.gc.ca to coordinate drop off of the document and a . The document will be sent to our Embassy in Buenos Aires, apostilled in 5 working days (items 1 and 2) and then sent back to our Consulate in Asuncion for pick up.

If you do not qualify for renewal, you must submit the general application.

  • Form completed and signed by an ;
  • Original proof of Canadian citizenship (Canadian birth certificate or citizenship certificate);
  • Valid id (Canadian, Argentine, Paraguayan, etc.) / original or photocopy signed by the guarantor;
  • Previous Canadian passport (original);
  • Proof of fee payment (to be paid online to Passport Canada, credit or debit card only)
  • Two (2) recent (one of them signed by the guarantor)

Children (under 16)

Please submit the following:

  • Form , completed and signed by an ;
  • Original proof of Canadian citizenship (Canadian birth certificate or citizenship certificate);
  • Valid id (Canadian, Argentine, Paraguayan, etc.) of the child and both parents / original or photocopy signed by the guarantor;
  • Previous Canadian passport (original);
  • If the child has no previous Canadian passport, original long firm birth certificate including the names of the parents. If the birth certificate is not in English or French, please enclose translation;
  • Proof of fee payment (to be paid online to Passport Canada, credit or debit card only)
  • Two (2) recent (one of them signed by the guarantor)

Lost / Stolen Passports

If your passport was lost or stolen, please contact the Embassy within office hours or the outside office hours. Please provide your next destination and expected travel date.

Requirements for first lost/stolen/damaged passports:

  • (adults) - This form can only be used if you were 16 when your lost/stolen/ damaged passport was issued

Passports lost and found: As soon as you to the Canadian government, it is automatically cancelled. If you find it, you will not be able to use it.
