Bilateral relations
Diplomatic relations between Canada and the Republic of Armenia were formally established in 1992. Canada is represented in Armenia by an embassy in Yerevan. Armenia is represented in Canada through its embassy in Ottawa.
Bilateral relations between Canada and Armenia benefit from close people-to-people ties, high-level exchanges and collaboration in international organizations, such as La Francophonie. Our partnership is founded on shared priorities, including long-term peace and stability in the South Caucasus. Canada is host to a vibrant and engaged Armenian community of over 60,000. Canada and Armenia regularly work together in multilateral forums, including the United Nations. The Armenian genocide was recognized by the Government of Canada in 2006, following resolutions in Canada’s parliament in 2002 and 2004.
On June 29, 2022, following the conclusion of the mission of Special Envoy Stéphane Dion, Canada announced the decision to open an embassy with a resident ambassador in Armenia. The embassy was officially opened on October 25, 2023. Canada works with Armenia to make progress on important priorities, including advancing Armenia’s democratic development and promoting inclusive economic growth and new opportunities for people in both countries.
The June 2021 visit of the Special Envoy to the European Union and Europe, and the then Ambassador to Germany, the Honourable Stéphane Dion, aimed to reinforce and support Armenian democracy by collaborating closely with the Armenian government, its representatives and its institutions, by working to mobilize the Armenian civil society, to reinforce its institutions, to grow Armenia's engagement with multilateral institutions, and to promote inclusive economic growth. The report was released in June 2022.
Trade relations
Total bilateral trade in 2023 was $24 million (Canadian exports: $14.9 million; imports: $9.1 million). Canadian exports were mostly comprised of food products, machinery and equipment. Imports mainly consisted of clothing and apparel.
bilateral trade arrangements include an agreement on trade and commerce (1999), a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement (1999) and a double taxation avoidance agreement (2005). In March 2017, an industry-to-industry memorandum of understanding was signed in the agricultural sector between the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association, Canada Pork International, the Canadian Swine Breeders Association, the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association and Armenia’s Center for Agribusiness and Rural Development Foundation.
Canada and Armenia are working to foster expanded commercial and economic ties in sectors of mutual interest, such as agriculture and agri-food, education, cleantech, ICT and mining.
