Emmanuel Kamarianakis, Ambassador of Canada to Brazil
Message
It is an honour to represent Canada in Brazil and contribute to strengthening the ties that unite our two countries. The Government of Canada has an important presence in Brazil with our Embassy in Brasília, a Consulate General in São Paulo and a Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro, as well as trade offices in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre and Recife.
Canada and Brazil share much in common. We are countries with vast territories that contain significant natural resources and encompass important ecosystems. We have well-established and robust democratic institutions and are committed to ensuring they remain strong and resilient. Our economies are anchored in the principles of free and open markets. Our societies are a tapestry of diversity and multiculturalism woven with rich cultural contributions of Indigenous peoples and newcomers. I am convinced that Canada and Brazil can enrich each other by building on these common strengths to foster more inclusive societies at home and abroad.
Canada is a trading nation with a deep history of open markets and openness to the world. Our 15 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) cover 61% of the world's GDP and provide preferential access to 1.5 billion consumers worldwide. We believe in the importance of inclusive trade, excellence in innovation and progressive trade policies.
As Canada’s largest commercial partner in South America, Brazil is a priority for Canada’s private sector. We are pleased to note our bilateral trade and investment increasing substantially year over year. Our bilateral trade reached 14 billion CAD in 2022 and our bilateral investment reached 32.6 billion CAD in the same year. Canadian investors are well-established in Brazil and have continued interest to grow their economic engagement in this country. I am also delighted that so many Brazilians choose Canada as a study destination given the excellence of our educational institutions and the opportunities they present for personal and professional growth.
Canada and Brazil work together on the international stage to advance common objectives including global action to fight climate change, an effective and just energy transition, a world free of hunger and inequality, and a more inclusive global governance system. Canada particularly looks forward to working with Brazil to advance these objectives as Brazil hosts the G20 in 2024 and the Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP) in 2025 and as Canada hosts the G7 in 2025.
