Bilateral relations
Bilateral relations between Canada and Montenegro are positive and show potential for continuing development. Canada appreciates Montenegro’s role in contributing to political stability in Southeast Europe, and more generally through its membership in NATO. Canada supports Montenegro’s EU accession aspirations, and encourages Montenegro’s continued reform progress.
Through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, Canada supports small-scale projects in Montenegro to promote Canadian priorities relating to rule of law, good governance, peace and security, gender equality, and women’s economic empowerment.
Diplomatic relations between Canada and Montenegro were formally established in 2006 when the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro was dissolved and the independent republic of Montenegro was created. Canada is represented by its Embassy in Belgrade, Serbia. In turn, Montenegro is formally represented in Canada by its Embassy in Washington, D.C. and it also has Honorary Consuls in Vancouver and in Toronto.
Trade relations
Merchandise trade between Canada and Montenegro totalled $5 million in 2023. Canada’s exports to Montenegro totalled $4.1M, down 35% from the year prior. The drop is mainly attributed to fewer exports of automatic data-processing machines (-$2M) and frozen fish (-$700K). In 2023, Canada’s top exports to Montenegro motor vehicles ($1M), vegetables & legumes ($576K), clothing ($558K), and vitamins ($480K). Canada’s imports from Montenegro totalled $0.9M, down from $7.1M the year prior. The drop is mainly attributed to fewer imports of lighting/signal equipment (-$4.3M) and electric motors (-$1.5M). In 2023, Canada’s top imports from Montenegro were wines ($218K), elevators/escalators ($144K), and drilling tools ($102K).
