Getting married in Morocco

If you are a Canadian citizen wishing to get married in Morocco under Islamic law, we recommend that you first consult the appropriate Moroccan authorities (Aduls) to learn about the procedures, required documents, and applicable fees. Aduls communicate only in Arabic, so we strongly suggest involving your future spouse in this process.

It is crucial to understand the legal and religious obligations involved. Note that if the Canadian citizen wishing to marry in Morocco is a man, he must convert to Islam. The Canadian Embassy cannot conduct marriages; the only way to marry a Muslim Moroccan citizen is through an Islamic marriage via the Aduls.

Embassy services

One of the documents you will need to present to the Moroccan authorities is a "Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage" (also called an "Affidavit of Nationality and Capacity to Marry"). The Embassy issues this document the same day for a fee of Can$50. You will need to complete and sign an affidavit, and provide your Canadian passport and, if applicable, your divorce documents.

Moroccan authorities

To complete your file with the Moroccan authorities, in addition to the certificate issued by the Embassy, you will also need to provide a:

  • birth certificate
  • criminal record check issued by the RCMP and duly apostilled
  • divorce certificate (if applicable) authenticated by Ƶ in Ottawa
  • medical certificate, and
  • work certificate

This list is only a guide; additional documents may be required. We strongly advise confirming the required documents with the Moroccan authorities before you travel to Morocco.
