Sara Nicholls, High Commissioner for Canada in Mozambique
Message
Welcome, Bienvenue, Bem vindo!
On behalf of the Government of Canada, and my colleagues here in Maputo, I welcome you to our High Commission’s website. On these pages you will find information on Canada’s growing commercial, political and development relationships with the governments, organizations and peoples of the Republic of Mozambique, Kingdom of Eswatini and the Republic of Angola. It is an honour for me to lead the dedicated team of Canadian and Mozambican staff who work alongside partners to deliver programs in the areas of bilateral relations, trade and business development, international assistance, humanitarian response, public affairs, and consular support.
I bring to the role a deep appreciation of the diversity of the peoples and places of the African continent having spent the majority of my career focused on Sub-Saharan Africa. From my new home in Mozambique, I will seek out opportunities to listen and to learn, while facilitating connections and partnerships to advance mutual priorities. It is truly an honour to represent Canada during this time of growth and deepening of relationships with all three countries.
Stretching back to 1975 when Canada and Mozambique first established diplomatic relations, we have collaborated in key developments on the global stage such as the establishment of the Ottawa Convention to Ban Landmines. Our strong relationship sets the foundation to enable programs supporting the breadth of our partnership. This includes significant development cooperation in the areas of health, education, governance, and peace. The entire team at the High Commission is steadfast in its commitment to ensure that Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy, which puts women and girls at the heart of our collective work, remains central to our efforts throughout the country. Our continues to work tirelessly to highlight Canadian capabilities and to identify opportunities for the Canadian private sector, working with our regional partners to promote bilateral trade and investment.
The High Commission of Canada in Maputo is accredited to Angola as well as Eswatini. With a growing number of Canadians who reside in Angola and a trade relationship that is evolving, providing service from Maputo allows our team to make connections across Lusophone Africa. Canada’s engagement in Eswatini is based on promoting human rights, fostering democratic development, strengthening health systems and seeking opportunities for commercial engagement.
