Allison G. Stewart, Chargée d’affaires of Canada to Myanmar

Biography

BSS Honours Sociology, Linguistics, University of Ottawa, 1993; JD, University of Toronto, 2002; joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, 2005. During her time at headquarters she was the Deputy Director for Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova (2021 to 2022) and head of the Oceans Law Section (2016 to 2017). She has served in various legal positions, as well as in export financing policy. Positions overseas included Athens, Greece (2010 to 2014) where she served as the Head of the Political, Economic and Public Affairs section, and Islamabad, Pakistan ( 2014 to 2016), where she was the Senior Trade Commissioner, with offices in Islamabad and Karachi. She was then posted to Phnom Penh, Cambodia in 2017 where she served as Chargé d’affaires/Head of the office until 2020. Prior to joining ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ, she practised tax and securities law in a prominent Canadian law firm in Toronto, and securities law in a large firm in Tokyo, Japan; served as a Japanese Interpreter at a major Japanese company in Canada; taught high school in Japan; and was a Program Counselor in a social services agency. She speaks English, Japanese, French, and Russian. She is married to artist and writer Christian Stewart.
