Marriage abroad
The requirements for marriage are set exclusively by the authorities of the country you intend do get married. For that reason, while you are in Canada, your first step should be to the contact the Municipality Marriage Bureau where the marriage will take place. Find out what information and documents you will need to provide as requirements can differ between municipalities.
Some things to consider when planning to get married in Türkiye:
- Contact the Embassy of Canada in Ankara or the Consulate of Canada in Istanbul to get specific information for the single status declaration form. It contains specific information requested by the local authorities. You will then have it signed in front of a notary public in Canada.
- You need to have your Canadian documents authenticated by the Government of Canada prior to obtaining local government approval. The Authentication Services Section does not offer a rush service. Takeinto account their processing time and plan your request and your wedding date accordingly.
- You may get some documentation legalized by the host government’s embassy, high commission or consulate in Canada before you leave. They may also be able to replace the authentication usually provided by the Canadian mission in your destination country.
- You may need to have your Canadian documentation translated into the language of your host country. Contact the Municipality Marriage Bureau where the marriage will take place in advance to confirm required documentation. Verify whether your documents need to be officially translated to local language and authenticated.
Once in Türkiye
- Contact the Embassy of Canada in Ankara or the Consulate of Canada in Istanbul to have them affix its official seal to your authenticated documents. This is required for the documents to be accepted for final authentication by the Turkish authorities.
- For in-person consular services please contact the Consular Section via email to make an appointment.
- Have the documents authenticated by the Turkish ministry of foreign affairs.
Note:
- Contact the Municipality Marriage Bureau for approximate timelines applicable for the procedures prior to the day the ceremony is scheduled to take place.
- You cannot get married at a Canadian embassy or consulate in a foreign country; Canadian consular officials do not perform marriage ceremonies.
Before you leave Canada
- Make sure to contact the Canadian mission in the country where you wish to get married to get information and receive the correct declaration form. Complete the declaration form and have it notarized in Canada.
- Follow the instructions provided by the Canadian mission and have your documents authenticated by the Government of Canada. This proves to the other government that Canada recognizes that the signature and seal on the document are genuine.

Notarial services
Please send your inquiries on notarial services to ANKRA-Consular@international.gc.ca or ISTBL-Consular@international.gc.ca for information and instructions.
For authentication and legalization by the Embassy or Consulate General of Canada
To be recognized in a foreign country, Canadian documents must be “authenticated and legalized”. Authentication is a certification of the genuineness of the signature and seal of a government official. The person who authenticates the signature certifies, by so doing, that he/she knows through formal channel of the signatory’s authority to execute, issue, or certify a document. Authentication of the signature and/or seal on a document confirms to another jurisdiction that the document is authentic.
Authentication services are primarily offered by the official Government of Canada Authentication Services Section (JLAC) in Canada, mostly for the use abroad of documents executed or issued in Canada.
Note: Canada is not a signatory to The Hague Apostille Convention; it is therefore not possible to obtain an “apostille” on Canadian documents.
For authentication of documents send scanned copies of your documents by email to ANKRA-Consular@international.gc.ca or ISTBL-Consular@international.gc.ca to receive further information and instructions.
