Employment eligibility
In accordance with the U.S. Department of State (DOS) regulations, the Embassy of Canada and its consulates in the United States can hire US citizens, legal permanent residents (LPR) or individuals holding at least one (1) following visa categories with accompanying documentation:
- accredited dependants holding an “A” visa, or individuals holding a “G”
- “NATO-2” visa with a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
If the individual is on an “A” visa and is not a dependent of a Canada-based staff (CBS), then an EAD is also required for employment at the Embassy of Canada and its Consulates in the US. Conditional permanent residents or individuals with an A, G or NATO-2 visa may be issued specified-period employment in accordance with the expiry date of their documents.
Benefits summary
Work hours
Full time office employees work 37.5 hours a week, Monday to Friday. General support employees work 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday.
Salary
Salary is paid in U.S. Dollars (USD) twice per month.
Leave
Vacation
We provide 1.25 days per month / 15 days per year of vacation and the amount increases with seniority.
Sick
We provide 1.25 days per month / 15 days per year of sick leave.
Leave with pay for child bonding
We provide new parents twelve (12) weeks of paid child bonding leave for the birth/arrival of a child.
Maternity health leave
New mothers receive an additional two (2) weeks leave to provide for pregnancy related illness, medical appointments and/or recovery related to childbirth.
Holidays
We provide 12 paid statutory holidays per year.
Other leave
We also provide leave for routine medical leave for self and spouse and children, bereavement, marriage, domestic emergency, critical illness, school conference/activity, jury duty among others.

Retirement and pension
We offer a defined benefit pension plan that features immediate vesting. In 2022, employees contribute 5.0 % of their salary into the plan but that percentage will increase to 6.5% in 2023.
Income tax and social security information
US citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) of the United States, Canadian citizens, dual-national Canadian-US citizens, and third country nationals have different tax obligations.
Canadian taxes
We withhold applicable Canadian taxes (Federal, Provincial, CPP, and EI) from Canadian citizens through payroll deductions.
US taxes
We do not withhold US income taxes “at source” through payroll deductions. Employees with US, dual-national or third-country citizenship are responsible for paying all applicable US taxes directly to the IRS and/or state tax authorities.
US social security
We do not withhold US Social Security taxes “at source” through payroll deductions. Eligible employees at a foreign mission are responsible for paying employee and employer US Social Security. We offer a rebate program to reimburse a portion of the employer’s Social Security to eligible employees.
