The Embassy of Canada to China celebrates Earth Day 2019 with BOMA BEST Silver level certification
April 22, 2019 – Beijing, China – ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ
Celebrated annually on April 22, Earth Day is the most recognized environmental event worldwide. It provides an opportunity to reflect on our cumulative impact on the environment.
In line with Canada’s commitments to the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ (GAC) is taking measurable actions to reduce its environmental footprint at missions abroad.
In conjunction with Earth Day 2019, GAC and the Embassy of Canada to China in Beijing are proud to announce the successful certification of the Embassy’s six major buildings under the BOMA BEST program, at the Silver level. GAC partnered with the Building Operators and Managers Association in Canada (BOMA Canada) and China (BOMA China) to pilot the program for the first time at a Canadian mission. The results bring the mission one step closer to its goal of being the greenest mission in Beijing, as announced in March 2018.
Through the application of the BOMA BEST Standard, the Embassy was able to further reduce its impacts on the environment. Initiatives included changes to existing building management processes, the implementation of minor sustainability projects (installation of low-flow toilets, LED lighting, motion sensors, programmable timers, litter-less lunches, green cleaning protocols, battery recycling, electric and hybrid vehicles, and on-site bike sharing), and a strong stakeholder engagement campaign led by the Embassy’s Green Committee.
Data collected from this exciting pilot will be used to further explore the various ways GAC can apply the principles of sustainable development in the management of missions abroad.
