Joint Statement of Intent by Canada and Chile on Critical Minerals
Today, Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development Mary Ng, and Chile’s Minister of Mining, Marcela Hernando Perez, issued the following Statement of Intent for Canada and Chile to deepen its existing collaboration on the Mining Sector with an emphasis on Critical Minerals.
We, Minister Ng of Canada and Minister Hernando of Chile, met today in Santiago to discuss Canada and Chile’s future collaboration in Mining and Critical Minerals. We recognize the long-standing relations and strong partnership between our two nations, particularly in the mining sector, a leading economic prosperity contributor to our respective economies. The move toward a global net-zero economy is generating a significant increase in demand for critical minerals and the clean technologies they enable around the world, creating a generational opportunity for Canadian and Chilean workers and businesses. As the world shifts its focus to critical minerals and their vital contribution to resilient supply chains, we commit to advance and deepen our collaboration in the mining sector. We are ready to support each other toward the success of our respective Critical Minerals Strategies, and associated initiatives with a strong emphasis on high environmental, social and governance standards (ESG) and innovation along with technical know-how.
We reflect on our positive engagement and collaboration under our current Memorandum of Understanding on the Sustainable Development of Minerals and Metals, signed in 2019, and look forward to its renewal next year. We commit to working together, throughout this year, to discuss the priority areas for the new MoU, which will include our collaboration in Critical Minerals as an important area of focus.
Canada’s current Cleantech trade Mission to Chile demonstrates the commitment our nations share towards a sustainable and decarbonized future. Canada and Chile are committed to working together to tackle this challenge and seize the opportunities to support economic growth.
Our Statement of Intent today demonstrates Canada and Chile’s strong friendship and partnership which is multifaceted, and we hope that it will bring many opportunities to continue building on our longstanding mining relationship.
Officials from Natural Resources Canada and ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ, and Chile’s Ministry of Mining will work closely together to lead on this important area of our bilateral relationship.
