Consulting with Canadians

Current status: Closed

Diversifying trade and investment with key markets around the world is a priority for the Government of Canada.

Over the past three years, Canada has implemented, or agreed to implement, various new tariff rate quotas (TRQs) for products under supply management as a result of the successful negotiations of new trade agreements.

Canada’s dairy, poultry and egg TRQs are implemented and administered by ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ in accordance with the Export and Import Permits Act and its associated regulations, and ministerial policies set out in Notices to Importers.

To ensure continued efficiency and effectiveness in administering Canada’s system of TRQs for supply managed products (dairy, poultry and eggs), the Government of Canada is seeking the views of stakeholders with an interest in the administration of these TRQs.

We want to hear from you. We welcome your ideas, your experiences and your priorities.

Stakeholders have until 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) on August 31, 2019, to submit their responses, comments and suggestions.

Why is Canada holding consultations on tariff rate quotas for commodities subject to supply management?

Through the negotiation of a number of new trade agreements, the Government of Canada has increased its TRQ commitments for supply managed commodities from the 20 TRQs established under the World Trade Organization in 1995 to 42 TRQs under administration today. Implementation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement would see this increase to 58 TRQs. To ensure continued efficiency and effectiveness, the Government of Canada is seeking stakeholder views on the allocation and administration of these TRQs.

Purpose of consultation

The consultations are intended to assist in providing evidence-based recommendations to guide ministerial decisions on longer-term TRQ-related allocation policies for products under supply management (dairy, poultry and eggs).

Who should participate?

The government would like to hear from all sectors of Canadian society and from international stakeholders, including:

The information collected as a result of this consultative exercise will assist the Minister of International Trade Diversification in determining how best to administer these TRQs.

How to participate

To participate in the consultation, interested parties are encouraged to review the background information and complete a short questionnaire.
