Joint statement by Canada's Minister Ng, Minister Champagne and Mexico's Secretary Clouthier, following Canada-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue
On August 15, 2022, Canada's Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business, and Economic Development, Mary Ng, and Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, with Mexico's Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier announced the launch of the Canada-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED).
The Dialogue aims to build on our countries' economic and commercial relationship by implementing strategic initiatives focused on our shared priorities. Our work will begin by focusing on a strong economic recovery from the pandemic, including the promotion of inclusive trade strategies in favour of underrepresented groups, such as women, youth, and Indigenous Peoples, as well as innovation and the resiliency of regional supply chains. These efforts will allow us to create jobs, increase competition, and achieve a resilient and inclusive economy.
Through this HLED, Canada and Mexico reaffirm their commitment for a more prosperous, inclusive and integrated North America. It will help strengthen our partnership to better ensure that our countries meet the challenges of our times. Canada and Mexico will regularly consult with the private sector, civil society and academia to gather different points of view.
By strengthening our bilateral cooperation and working together, we recognize the importance of the development of new technologies, the promotion of sustainable investments, the integration of innovation projects and the exchange of best practices.
The mechanism will be co-chaired by ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ; Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and Mexico's Ministry of Economy. The HLED will encompass three pillars, with the flexibility to include new initiatives and opportunities as appropriate:
Strengthening our competitive advantage
Both countries intend to encourage greater participation of skilled workers in key sectors and foster workforce development for areas where there is a need for qualified human resources to ensure regional competitiveness.
Canada and Mexico will also collaborate to strengthen regional integration and resilience in priority sectors by working to maintain a healthy business environment and an innovative ecosystem that fosters talent.
Supporting equitable growth and bilateral trade
The pandemic has shown our countries the importance of promoting Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and the participation of underrepresented groups in the regional economy. Canada and Mexico will promote joint initiatives to include women-owned businesses, youth and other underrepresented groups in the post-Covid economic recovery.
Projects under this pillar will also promote the involvement of Indigenous Peoples in the economy and will advance best practices to generate sustainable outcomes for their economic participation.
Additionally, we will promote investments that contribute to increasing sustainable sectors in the North American region.
Strengthening our investment climates
Canada and Mexico will work to improve the business environments in both countries and foster productive private investment as the engines for economic growth, economic recovery and job creation, in close consultation with the private sectors of both countries.
Minister Ng, Minister Champagne and Secretary Clouthier, welcome the launch of this initiative to strengthen economic, investment and innovation ties between Canada and Mexico for the benefit of the citizens of both countries.
As part of the joint work, the results of the HLED will be informed in the Canada-Mexico Partnership on Trade, Investment and Innovation Group. Mexico's Secretary and Canada's Ministers will meet twice a year, and follow the Group's progress. The next meeting will be held later this year.
