Joint Declaration on Venezuela
December 7, 2020
The signatories (*), a group of countries seized by the multidimensional crisis affecting Venezuela, including members of the Lima Group and other countries committed to support the recovery of democracy there, declare the following:
1. We reiterate that the elections to renew the National Assembly of Venezuela on December 6, organized by the illegitimate regime of Nicolas Maduro, lack legality and legitimacy because they were carried out without the minimum guarantees of a democratic process, which include freedom, security and transparency, the integrity of ballots, the participation of all political forces, and inclusion of international observation.
2. We call on the international community to join in the rejection of these fraudulent elections and support the efforts for the recovery of democracy, the respect of human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela.
3. We call on the actors of all Venezuela, of all ideological tendencies and party affiliations, to prioritize the interests of Venezuela and urgently commit to supporting a transition process, defined and driven by Venezuelans, to find a peaceful and constitutional solution that will lead the country to free, fair and credible presidential and parliamentary elections, as soon as possible.
(*) Signatory countries: Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia
