The International Fund for Agricultural Development
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is an International Financial Institution and a UN agency. It works to eradicate poverty and hunger in rural areas of developing countries. IFAD provides low interest loans and grants to help these countries grow their agriculture and transform rural areas. Its focus is on helping poor rural people to:
- improve production and productivity
- build capacity
- become more resilient
- gain better access to markets and services
Canada and the International Fund for Agricultural Development
Canada is a founding member of IFAD (1977). We are one of the top ten donors to the Fund. We hold a seat on the Executive Board and are part of the constituency comprising of Ireland, Finland and Israel.
In 2024, Canada announced a contribution to IFAD of $100 million over three years (2025-2027).
Canada also provided a $100 million loan to IFAD’s Private Sector Financing Programme. This loan aims to boost private sector investments. It will support and benefit small producers and rural enterprises involved in local agri-food systems in developing countries.
IFAD is an important climate partner for Canada, delivering on two climate finance loans. They support climate smart and gender responsive agriculture programming. These loans total $340 million.
