Recommendation

Canada welcomes the positive steps taken by Ghana to build on its efforts to improve good governance, accountability and transparency, including the adoption of legislation on the Right to Information.

Canada recommends that Ghana:

  1. Uphold the rights of sexual and gender minorities and prevent and address related criminalization, discrimination and violence, including within law enforcement agencies.
  2. Advance gender equality by facilitating more equitable representation of women in Parliament, including through the adoption of the Affirmative Action Bill.
  3. Undertake measures to ensure the safety and protection of journalists including by ensuring the full implementation of the existing framework on Police-Media Relations and Safety of journalists.
  4. Promote responsible business conduct and corporate accountability, including by enforcing international best practices such as the Voluntary Principles to ensure sound environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards

Canada continues to be concerned about instances where legal action is not pursued against alleged perpetrators of violence. Canada urges the Government of Ghana to take steps to prevent, and ensure accountability for, acts of violence perpetrated against individuals, including on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.
