Canada’s 10-Year Commitment to Global Health and Rights
We have made great progress over the past decades on improving the health and rights of women and children. Despite this, poverty and inequality still exist. This prevents many women, children, and adolescents from getting the quality health care services they need to survive and thrive.
In 2019 Canada launched a 10-Year Commitment (10YC) to advance the health and rights of women and girls around the world (2020-2030). This was part of our Feminist International Assistance Policy.
We promised to increase our global health investments to reach an average of $1.4 billion each year, starting in 2023. Of this amount, we promised to dedicate $700 million to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights. The 10YC is Canada’s largest and longest international assistance funding commitment in a given sector.
This commitment:
- promotes comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights;
- builds on Canada's leadership in global health and gender equality;
- advances the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Over and above the 10-Year Commitment, we played a leadership role during the robust global response to COVID-19. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have strengthened our focus on equitable and resilient health systems. They serve as the foundation for essential health services and act as the first line of defense against future pandemics.
