On March 9, 2018, Canada launched negotiations toward a free trade agreement (FTA) with Mercosur. The Government of Canada is releasing the Initial Environmental Assessment of the Canada-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement negotiations, which attempts to determine whether significant environmental impacts are likely to occur in Canada as a result of a potential Canada-Mercosur FTA.
In accordance with the , ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ (GAC) is committed to conducting environmental assessments for all trade and investment negotiations using a process that requires interdepartmental coordination and public consultation.
Why is Canada holding consultations on the Initial Environmental Assessment of the Canada-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement Negotiations?
The Government of Canada is committed to sustainable development. Mutually supportive trade and environmental policies can contribute to this objective. To this end, the Minister of Small Business, Export Promotion and International Trade has directed trade officials to seek information and otherwise improve their understanding of the relationship between trade and environmental issues at the earliest stages of decision making, and to do this through an open and inclusive process. Conducting Environmental Assessments of Canada’s trade negotiations is critical to this work. We are committed to hearing from Canadians on this important subject and will ensure that Canadians continue to have the opportunity to provide their views.
Who should participate?
The Government of Canada is soliciting the views of the Canadian public and interested Canadian stakeholders on the Initial Environmental Assessment of the Canada-Mercosur Free Trade Agreement negotiations, including:
- individuals
- businesses, including small and medium-sized enterprises
- industry associations
- experts and academics
- civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations
- labour unions
- provincial, territorial and municipal governments
- Indigenous peoples and organizations
- students and youth
- any other interested Canadian
