FOR DISCUSSION
- Appointment of the WTO Director-General - Request from the African Group (WT/GC/W/948)
If appropriate, draw from the following:
- My delegation would like to thank the delegation of Chad on behalf of the African Group for putting forward this proposal, which we support.
- It is sensible and practical for the Chair of the General Council to commence the process for the Organization’s next Director General to make sure that this process does not overlap with preparations for MC14.
- The Director General has a strong track record and under her leadership the membership has concluded longstanding negotiations and has been able to communicate to the outside world why what we do in this house matters to ALL.
- This type of leadership is needed now more than ever.
- In Canada’s view, Doctor Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is the right leader at the right time and we hope that she will make herself available to serve a second term.
