Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund
The Canadian Humanitarian Assistance Fund (CHAF) responds to smaller-scale, rapid-onset disasters like:

- water
- sanitation and hygiene
- nutrition

¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ funds the CHAF. The Humanitarian Coalition manages it. The coalition is a group of 12 leading Canadian non-governmental agencies. They have active programming in 140 countries worldwide.
Effective humanitarian response
Many disasters never get profile in international news. Yet the impact for families caught up in smaller-scale, localized disasters can be serious and life-threatening. The CHAF makes sure that funds go to the right Humanitarian Coalition member. They are best placed to respond to a disaster because of their:
- Active presence in the affected area
- Rapid and high-quality needs assessment of the disaster’s impact
- Established relationships with local partner organizations
- Knowledge of local context
- Effective coordination with other humanitarian actors
Humanitarian Coalition members who manage CHAF projects include:
- Canadian Lutheran World Relief
- CARE Canada
- Islamic Relief Canada
- Oxfam Canada
- Oxfam-Québec
- Save the Children Canada
- Plan International Canada,
- World Vision Canada
At least half of all CHAF projects are implemented with or through local partner organizations.
Assistance during the initial emergency phase
The CHAF is a proven model. It provides quick and effective response to smaller-scale, rapid-onset disasters.
Since 2014, this ongoing fund has:
- supported humanitarian response to 126 smaller-scale, rapid-onset disasters
- helped around 250,000 disaster-affected people each year
Each CHAF project lasts 4 to 6 months.
Projects get funding from:
- ¶¶ÒùÊÓƵ ($100,000 to $350,000 per project)
- the Humanitarian Coalition member
- the Humanitarian Coalition Secretariat
